My primary service emphasizes leadership initiatives that strengthen the department, graduate education, expand research opportunities, and advance community-engaged scholarship. I request serving on committees that align with my strengths and values. I prefer service that allows me to advocate for staff and colleague, improve curriculum, or are student facing to foster student leaders.

  • Director of Graduate Studies in Art and Design, Department of Art and Design, Peck School of the Arts, University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, Milwaukee, WI. (3-year term. For my AY 2025-26 sabbatical, Professor Kyoung Ae Cho is currently serving as Interim Director. 2024-2027)

    The Director of Graduate Studies serves as the chief administrator of the graduate programs, and maintains records, correspondence, etc., as they pertain to students' admission, grades, scholarships, fellowships, etc. In addition, the Director of Graduate Studies maintains liaison with the Graduate School and the various faculty committees within the Graduate School. The Director’s duties include all graduate scheduling (mid-semester critiques, graduate reviews, exhibitions, etc.), recruitment and admissions (working with PSOA to update web site, working with Graduate School to ensure admission efficiency, communicating with prospective graduates, organizing and sharing M.F.A. submissions with graduate faculty for admission selection, meeting with and conducting tours with visiting prospective graduate students, sending out offer letters and rejection letters, etc.), curriculum (scheduling graduate courses, revising curriculum, updating the Graduate Handbook, create and maintain graduate resources web page), and graduation and advising (meeting regularly with graduate students to ensure seamlessness through the program, working with Graduate School to ensure proper graduation students).

    Serves as the official channel of communications for all matters affecting the department as a whole between the department and the President, the Chancellor, the dean, other University officials or departments. 

    • Calls meetings of the departmental faculty and of the executive committee at his/her own initiative or at the request of any two (2) members of the respective bodies, presides over the meetings, transmits minutes of the departmental and executive committee meetings to the appropriate dean, and to the departmental or executive committee members and maintains such minutes in the departmental files.

    • Has charge of all official correspondence.  

    • Determines that all necessary records of meetings, teaching, research and public service of the department are properly kept and are always accessible to the proper authorities.

    • Reports to the dean regarding the activities and needs of the department.

    • Has responsibility for all departmental supplies.

    • Submits new courses, major revisions of existing courses, and deletion of courses proposed by the department for action by the appropriate course committee and by the dean.

    • Takes action, in case of emergency, pending a meeting of the Departmental Executive Committee. 

    • In general, acts as the executive of the department, including the areas of personnel, student issues, budget, curriculum and research in accordance with established policies of the departmental faculty and its executive committee.

    Many of the specific duties of the Associate Chair will be directed by the Chair in response to the needs of the Department of Art & Design during the duration of the Associate Chair's tenure in that position.  

    • Specific tasks for which the Associate Chair of Curriculum is responsible include: 

      • Chairs the Curriculum Committee in Art & Design.

      • Serves as a representative of the Chair at meetings and functions when the Chair is unable to attend. 

      • In collaboration with the Chair, assigns faculty and staff to Committee and service activities. Supervises committee activities and requests yearly committee reports from the committee chairs.  

      • Posts notice of open meetings for Faculty and Executive Committee meetings. 

      • Informs Chair of issues in which the Chair may not be directly involved.

The Faculty Rights and Responsibilities Committee (FRRC) upon referral by the University Committee, pursuant to the provisions of s. UWS 6.01, Wis. Adm. Code, conducts fact-finding concerning allegations of misconduct, which may include alleged human rights violations, made against one or more faculty members or against a faculty body and makes recommendations to the Chancellor concerning disciplinary action or appropriate corrective non-disciplinary action.

Member, Graduate School Scholastic Appeals Committee (2017 - 2019)

The Dean of the Graduate School may seek advice from the Graduate Faculty Committee Subcommittee on Appeals.

The functions of the Subcommittee on Appeals are:

  • To advise the Dean of the Graduate School on matters related to student claims of unfair treatment and student requests for exceptions to Graduate School policies.

  • To make recommendations, where appropriate, to the GFC, for policy changes that may affect appeals.

Under no circumstances may the Subcommittee on Appeals substitute its judgment for that of the faculty when the merits of a student’s work are involved. If the Subcommittee on Appeals and the Dean agree that an appeal involves an assessment of the merits of a student’s work rather than the procedure by which a decision was made, an independent review panel composed of persons with expertise in the subject at hand should be convened.

The Area Head PBA works collaboratively with all faculty and staff in the area to complete the necessary tasks for that specific area. The Area Head is responsible for fairly delegating duties amongst the area faculty and staff. The Area Head is the area contact person for Departmental communication and serves as liaison with the Chair, the Director of Graduate Studies, the Undergraduate Advisors, other committees as needed, and the office staff.  

The PBA Area Head is the official supervisor for staff, a 25% lab tech, PAs, and work-study students involved in teaching area courses or working in area facilities.

Tasks that need to be done include but are not limited to: 

  • Provide academic and administrative leadership for Printmaking and Book Arts, fostering collaboration among faculty, staff, and students.

  • Coordinate course scheduling, assign teaching responsibilities, and ensure appropriate instructional coverage each semester.

  • Develop and manage the area budget, oversee expenditures, and coordinate purchasing in collaboration with departmental staff.

  • Review graduate admissions applications, make recommendations for admission and assistantship appointments, and participate in graduate advising.

  • Conduct and/or delegate annual performance reviews for Academic Staff, Teaching Assistants, Project Assistants, and Work-Study employees.

  • Lead curriculum review and development; represent the area in departmental Curriculum and Policy Committee and faculty meetings.

  • Supervise area facilities, coordinating with technical staff and student workers to maintain equipment, safety, and studio operations.

  • Serve as primary liaison between the area and the Department Chair, Director of Graduate Studies, Undergraduate Advisor, and office staff.

  • Coordinate the area’s participation in recruitment, retention, and public engagement events such as KSE Open Studios, First Year Program Tours, Advisathon, and Artists Now! programming.

  • Monitor course enrollments, approve course permissions and overrides, and support student advising and mentoring activities.

  • Communicate departmental updates and initiatives to area faculty and staff to ensure consistent information flow.

  • Recruit and mentor student representatives and leaders for departmental and student organization committees.

  • Contribute to departmental decision-making through participation and voting in scholarship, admissions, and curriculum processes.

  • Print Club advisor.

Special Projects:

Collaboratively designing a Letterpress and Output facility expansion and shared lab with Design and Visual Communication. (2025 - present)

Co-coordinated a large printmaking equipment move when UW-Waukesha closed its campus. (2025)

Coordinated a large letterpress donation and move from the Purple Parable Press’ estate, Kenosha. (2024)

Founded the PaperMakers Farm, pigment and dye garden at the Kenilworth Square East building. (2016)

Co-designed and built a shared printmaking and photo lab in the Kenilworth Square East building. (2012) 

Community-Level Service

KK River Neighbors in Action (neighborhood association), WaterMarks liaison, planning art and science collaborations, providing papermaking and printmaking activities at ranging events in the neighborhood, working with community members on developing WaterMarker activation, and tabling at community events - planning meetings take place every first Tuesday of the month. (2018- present)

Sherman Park Eco Ambassadors / Sherman Park Neighborhood Association, WaterMarks liaison, planning art and science collaborations, providing papermaking and printmaking activities, working with community members on developing WaterMarker activation, and tabling at community events - meetings take place biweekly on Mondays.
