The PaperMakers Farm (PMF) is a collection of raised gardens for food, dyes, pigments, and sculpture. It’s located on a third-floor patio, nestled between UWM’s Kenilworth Square East (KSE) research building (studios for arts faculty and grad students) and Kenilworth Square Apartments (international student and graduate housing). KSE is approximately 10 blocks from UWM’s Arts Complex on the main campus. The PMF is an outdoor community garden space and living learning laboratory. It fosters environmental stewardship, community-building through gardening, and research that bridges arts, agriculture, and science. In our gardens, we share and celebrate traditions, value sustainability, promote environmental awareness. We rely on collaboration and recognize that actively sharing skills and knowledge through gardening is an effective method for connection, unification, and innovation. I founded the garden in 2017 with three printmaking undergrads, Austin Boechler, Dakotosky Bowen, and Madison Tebo. Since then I have served as the faculty advisor and coordinator. With the help of graduate students (Aaron Kia Napunako Boyd, MFA candidate, is the current student lead), we have expanded to include additional departments and community partners. Current partners include: UWM’s Office of Sustainability, WaterMarks, Milwaukee Municipal Sewerage Department, and a increasing number of students, staff, and faculty. We have presented our research at the Mid America Printmaking Council (Kansas State, panel), SGC International (UW-Madison, panel), UW-System Sustainability Summit (UW-Stevens Point, panel), UWM’s Undergraduate Research Symposium (annually), UWM Alumni Association - Mobile Master Chats, and more…
